We are pleased to announce that beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year, the National History Bee will also offer a full Elementary School Division for students in 5th grade and younger. At all levels of the competition, students in 5th grade and younger will play separately. This will allow younger students to compete on a more even playing field, and will also allow us to offer slightly easier and age-appropriate questions for younger players.
For the National History Bowl, whether a regional tournament offers an Elementary Division will be a function of how many teams with all 5th graders and younger sign up. At least 4 teams are needed for a tournament to have a separate Elementary Division; otherwise, these teams would play with Middle School teams (or in a division limited to players in 6th grade and younger if possible).
At the National History Bowl National Championships, however, we expect to offer Elementary School, 6th Grade, and Middle School (i.e. 7th and 8th grade) Divisions. For the 2018-2019 academic year, the National History Bowl National Championships will not require prior qualifying, so whether a regional History Bowl tournament offers a separate Elementary School Division or not will not matter to a team’s ability to attend Nationals.
